ITV’s ‘Vera’ with Brenda Blethyn

Back in October last year I got asked to do a few days shooting stills on the set of ‘Vera’ over in Newcastle.

This is the second season of Vera and is a police drama starring Brenda Blethyn who plays DCI Vera Stanhope.

The first episode of season two was aired last night, and it was great to see that so many of my shots had been used, as props for the cast and also pinned on the crime board in the incident room.

I had a great day out on the beach with Julie Graham, Jessica Barden and Steven Hartley who were all thoroughly nice people, and made my job very easy.

Next weeks episode has a great storyline, and I am looking forward to seeing how many of my shots they have used for that one.

Its a great show and worth a watch, tune in on Sunday ITV1 8pm.

Exciting new developments with our Boudoir Photoshoots

Boudoir - Go for it, and indulge in some pampering! Gorgeous hairstyling and lingerie are all elements we can help with.

If you’re a regular visitor to our blog, you will have noticed by now that boudoir is very much my thing, and with all of my ladies I discuss suggestions for lingerie. Version II Karl Bowman Runway Show 2012

Pete and I had a fantastic evening shooting the Karl Bowman 2012 Runway Show.

By working together Pete and I were able to shoot from different perspectives, so we have put together an additional slideshow in B&W, which compliments the fifties style glamour and elegance of the show. Absolutely loved the display that Karl and his team created, and those fabulous hair styles by the talented team at Sculpture House.

Karl Bowman Runway Show 2012

Louise and I had a great night on Saturday shooting the Karl Bowman 2012 Runway Show.

Karl and his team put on a fantastic display of his recent work, the dresses and models were amazing.

The team from Sculpture House did a brilliant job with the hair, and we are looking forward doing the shoot for the lady who won the prize of a hair and makeup makeover and photo shoot with us.

Karl is an extremely talented young man and definitely going places, we wish him all the best and look forward to working with him again.

Lindos Minisonic Mic Kit Review

So I have had my new Minisonic Mic Kit from Lindos for a couple of weeks now, and thought I would share some thoughts. Before I ordered my kit I exchanged a few emails with the company and was pleasantly surprised to get a very swift reply from the companies MD Chris Skirrow. This is a guy who is clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about the technology, but also very keen to help his clients. I had a couple of queries as to how Chris would suggest I use the kit with my existing equipment, and got a very detailed reply explaining what set-up would give me the best results. I decided to take Chris’ advice and I opted for the main kit with the addition of the VA-MAGIC Lead as the interface between the Pre-amp and my Canon5D Mk2. Prior to this I have been using an Alesis Pro-Track with a Rode shotgun mic and experienced quite a bit of background noise and hiss. Setting up the gear using Chris’ recommendations was very straightforward and it is producing great results. The kit itself is very compact and well-designed, I like the feel of the individual components and the build quality is great. I tend to shoot on my own a fair bit, so having a very simple set-up which is easy to get going with very quickly is important to me, and being able to record great quality audio directly into my DSLR is a major bonus. In addition it makes editing a lot quicker as I no longer need to sync the separate audio from the Pro-track to the video. I think I will build on the kit and get the extra video Mics, as I do think having them mounted atop the Canon will make for a very easy interview set-up. For the money these guys are charging I think it represents great value, and I hope they continue to develop the range, as I think the addition of wireless transmission would be the obvious next step for them.

Sam’s Bump Shoot

I have been really looking forward to this shoot with the lovely Sam. I first met Sam about 18 months ago, when she booked a boudoir shoot with us. To follow up with a bump portrait session is such a priviledge in more than one way – firstly, it is so lovely to capture a special and significant moment in a woman’s life (and there will be more to follow with a newborn shoot). And secondly, when our clients come back to us for additional portrait sessions it really is the best compliment we can receive!

Prior to Sam’s shoot we had a chat about the sort of imagery she would like captured, and ideas on clothing – which all really helped in preparation for the shoot. Here are some of my favourite shots from the day!

Family Lifestyle Shoot with beautiful baby Chloe, Cumbria

Lots of woolies on a winter day make for a fab family shoot!

We had a really lovely shoot last weekend with this great couple and their 8 month old daughter Chloe. Chloe’s mum brought along a bag of clothes to our studio, so we could decide between us what it would be best to wear – goodies included a choice of woolie hats, and some gorgeous colourful, chunky outdoor knits. Although this may not seem like the obvious choice for a shoot – it’s perfect. Wrapping up in lots of winter layers can look fabulous!

The shoot consisted of 2 parts – initially we focused on Chloe within our toastie studio – perfect for capturing those gorgeous folds of baby skin within a comfortable environment. After a coffee and outfit change, we went for a wander around Rickerby Park in Carlisle. As luck would have it the weather was beautiful and crisp, perfect for capturing some relaxed family portraiture!

Angela’s Fashion Inspired Lifestyle Shoot

Looking Fabulous in your Forties!

We had a great fashion inspired shoot last week, with the lovely Angela. Angela is a local business woman, who has a potential opportunity for some modelling work. With this in mind, we organised a lifestyle shoot where Angela had the opportunity to wear a variety of outfits and accessories. Local to our studio on Fisher Street in Carlisle, we have some great locations for outdoor photography, so previous to Angela’s shoot, we earmarked some spots with potential.

On the morning of the shoot, the lovely Bridget Foster came along to complete Angela’s lovely make-up, and Sara Gadd joined us to help with styling, and some gorgeous accessories.

Angela was a great sport, considering the weather, which was rather on the cold side! Lot’s of coffee stops kept up the energy levels (many thanks to Freerange Artists in Carlisle Court!), and the outcome was a fantastically enjoyable day, with beautiful images of Angela.

Mark & Lizzie’s Beautiful Winter Wedding – Doxford Hall, Northumberland

Scarlet roses, icy country lanes and a beautiful intimate country church - ingredients for a magical winter wedding!

Mark and Lizzie planned their wedding for 17th December – a real Christmassy wedding, near to Lizzie’s family home in Northumberland. Following a beautifully atmospheric ceremony at St Michael and All Angels Church in Felton, we journeyed off to Doxford Hall, which is a wonderful country house hotel, near to the coast in Northumberland. We were really lucky to have some cold but beautifully sunny wintery weather, so after a glass of wine, Mark and Lizzie headed outside briefly to enjoy some intimate portraiture. Doxford Hall is a lovely elegant hotel, and made a great location for capturing gorgeous images! Pete and I stayed to capture images of the after-dinner speeches (which is always great fun!), and then later into the evening for the first dance, which was not to be missed! Hey ya by Outkast! Julie & Darcy – Delectable pet portraiture!

Fantastically fun and stylish photoshoot!

This wonderful photoshoot was held on the run up to Christmas. Julie, business woman and owner of Satu Interiors, in Penrith, Cumbria got in touch to arrange a portrait session with her adorable miniature dachshund Darcy, as a surprise gift for her husband. Being a big fan of Julie’s creativity, we were very much looking forward to this shoot! Julie’s love of accessories, texture and colour added a lovely dimension to this shoot. Athough it may not seem an obvious choice, working with colour, accessories and styling with your pet can really set the scene for highly personal, and fabulous (and maybe a touch quirky!) imagery. In these images you can see Darcy sporting a dapper jacket, which has been tailor made from fabric in Julie’s studio!

At the start of the shoot, Julie came along to our studio in Carlisle where over a coffee (we always like to start with a brew!) we worked out a couple of locations and agreed on which accessories to use (Julie brought along a hold-all with a selection of goodies) . As luck would have it, the rain eased off, and we headed out to a couple of locations very close to our studio – with very pleasing results! Sitting on a muddy flowerbed on my binbag to capture these shots was definitely worth the effort! These are some of our favourite shots, my very favourite being the one of Darcy hopping out of the bag. I bet she was pooped when she got home!
